Coastal Protection Action Plan
Coastal Protection Action Plan
Climate change is causing rising sea levels and stronger storms, which can lead to more storm surges, flooding, and erosion, putting people and properties at risk. Nova Scotians living by the coast and municipalities now have new resources to make their homes, communities and natural areas more resilient to this reality.
On February 26, the government released The Future of Nova Scotia’s Coastline: The plan to protect people, homes and Nature from climate change along our Coast, which has 15 actions for property owners, municipalities and the Province to take to make coastal homes, communities and natural areas safer.
The plan focuses on empowering coastal property owners to make informed decisions, supporting municipal leadership and aligning resources with coastal protection. The full plan is at: https://www.novascotia.ca/coastal-plan. It is a three-year plan with 15 actions to inform decision-making, support municipal leadership and align government resources with coastal protection.
Below is a list of the current resources provided under the Coastal Protection Action Plan:
Coastal Hazard Map: The Coastal Hazard Map shows a worst-case scenario of coastal flooding in the year 2100. It will be updated with more scenarios in the coming months.
Navigators: Navigators are available to help Nova Scotians use the Coastal Hazard Map, understand the map results, and better understand coastal hazards. Navigators are available via email at coastalnavigator@novascotia.ca or by phone 1-888-570-4240.
Resource Guide for Property Coastal Property Owners: The Resource Guide for Property Owners is for Nova Scotians who want to learn about coastal hazards and coastal protection.
Coastal Adaptation Toolkit:v The Coastal Adaptation Toolkit, offered by ClimAtlantic, can help coastal property owners be aware of their coastal environment, the different adaptation options available to them, and the applicability of the options under different scenarios.
